The Brief:

Create a visual identity for a conceptual magazine, including a typographic wordmark, cover page, table of contents page, and two articles.

The Concept

retrospec is a science and technology magazine that celebrates using outdated and vintage technology, bridging the gap between the past and present.

The Wordmark

The Process - Sketches

Typography was explored through investigating different typefaces and creating and adjusting relationships between letterforms, with the magazine concept as the driving force.

The Process - Digital Iterations

Type was experimented with to find a balance between old and new – the dated look of vintage type paired with a contemporary, technological feel.

After feedback and discussion amongst peers, archaic serif typefaces were changed out for an Art-Deco revival-inspired aesthetic, which would become the final direction.

The Process - Early Spreads

Articles relating to vintage tech were laid out and composed following conceptual guidelines and designed editorial standards to achieve a mix of vintage and contemporary style.

The Process - The Cover

As the visual identity of the magazine was continuing to develop, the cover was designed to bring the concept of the articles closer to a real publication.
