Retrospec Magazine

The Challenge

Create a visual identity for a conceptual magazine, including a typographic word mark, cover, table of contents page, and two articles. Then, communicate the publication’s identity through motion graphics.

The Process – Creating a Word Mark

The core ideas of Retrospec were first explored through the creation of a typographic word mark. Typographic exploration was led by the magazine concept of marrying the old and the new – and by the spatial relationships between letterforms.

The Concept

Retrospec is a conceptual technology magazine that celebrates using outdated and vintage technology, bridging the gap between the past and present. It is meant for enthusiasts, hobbyists, or anyone interested in revitalizing what they already have, and presents an anti-consumerist perspective.

The Process – Spread Designs

Articles relating to vintage tech were laid out and composed following conceptual guidelines and designed editorial standards to achieve a mix of vintage and contemporary style.

Final Word Mark

After feedback and discussion amongst peers, archaic serif typefaces were changed out for a Modernist inspired aesthetic, which would become the final direction.

The Process – The Cover

As the visual identity of the magazine was continuing to develop, the cover was designed to bring the concept of the articles closer to a real publication.
